1. It costs virtually nothing to start
A digital publishing business costs very little money to start. If you are a “do-it yourself” type of person, the only item you really need to buy is hosting, and if you are trying to do it dirt cheap you can even get that for free.
Other than that, you will eventually need to sign up for some sort of email marketing plan, but, you can get everything you need for the year for under $200. In today’s world, a Digital Products business is essentially as “no cost” as it gets.
2. Completely Passive Income
Once your product and website designed for sales is turned on, you are ready to make money. However, there is one huge element missing from this equation: Traffic.
A lot of the jerks out there selling “eBooks on eBooks” leave the traffic element out of the equation when their pitch product, or tell you it is easy. It is not easy!
Generating traffic takes work and time, but if you continue to chip away, you should eventually start to generate passive income. From this point the more keyword optimized quality content you can add to your page, the more traffic it will generate. Do nothing (or very little), and your page should still generate a stream of regular visitors and make sales, assuming it is designed correctly. The more time, effort and creativity you have to put into your digital eBook publishing business, the further it can go!
3. Fun
I can’t tell you how fun it is to sell eBooks. I enjoy writing, designing and trying to figure out ways to expand my publishing empire. My goal is to create between 10-15 original products and websites, and then slow down a bit, but until then, it is full steam ahead!
I do a little work each day, and I structure my time to both add to my current products and develop new ones. I even recently switched fields and took a job with a web development firm that has very big plans for 2010. All thanks to my initial foray into the eBook publishing world!
4. Work at your own pace
A completely automated sales model gives you the ability to work when you want to, and make money literally 24 hours a day. There is nothing more exciting then waking up in the morning already having made multiple sales. If you can stay motivated long enough to get to the point of selling a few books a week, you can learn to expand your efforts to sell a few books a day. It takes time, but everything in life worth doing takes time, and making money selling eBooks is no different.
5. Keep 100% of the profits
The brilliance of eBooks is that they allow the regular person with no publishing experience or connections that ability to share their knowledge with the world with relative ease. While the published author generally receives a few cents on the dollar, the eBook publisher gets to keep 100% of the profits. Sell a million copies with a publisher, and you will be lucky to make a $100,000. Sell a million copies of your eBook on your own and you are sitting in Tahiti sipping Mai tais.
6. Create something from nothing
One of the coolest aspects of eBooks is the fact that you can basically turn your knowledge and time into products that you can sell forever, and never run out of supply. Best of all, you can work from home and use very little resources. For all you “green” people out there, what better way to reduce your carbon footprint than by working from home and selling something that takes up very little of the earth’s resources to produce?
7. Unlock other ways to make money
Learning to publish your first eBook will give you a chance to learn about other ways to make money online, and open your mind to new ideas. For example, once you build a somewhat successful website and product, you should be able to compile a mailing list of a few thousand contacts. Once you get to this point, making money is as easy as sending out a newsletter with a few well targeted affiliate products.
8. Learn marketable skills
While the traditional author does little more than write, the eBook author is the writer, publisher, distributor, marketing, and sales department. It is learn-as you go job, but the more you put in through study, trial and error, the more you will get out. When I started out, I was still looking for my place in life after college, and learning to build websites and publish my e-Book led me into a job I love with a custom web development company.
9. Unleash your creativity
Publishing eBooks will allow you to be creative on many different levels. Not only does the product development portion require a ton of creative talent, you will also have to think up innovative ways to target new customers. As you gain more knowledge about eBook publishing, you should eventually reach a point where new ideas are constantly bouncing around your brain.
10. Synergy
Entering the world of eBook publishing will allow you to interact and work with lots of other smart people to your mutual benefit. You would never believe the amounts of information knowledgeable people are willing to give away for free if you just ask them a question or two.
